The Pima Area Labor Federation (PALF) 1st Annual Community Partnership Awards will be Thursday, May 15th, 2014. Doors Open at 6pm with appetizers and no host cocktails. The ceremony begins at 7pm with special guests US Congressman, Raul Grijalva and Arizona Daily Star Political Cartoonist, David Fitzsimmons. Following the program will be a live show with musical guests, Vox Urbana.
PALF is a coalition of labor unions affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) in Pima County. Over the years, unions have played a part in institutionalizing child labor laws, the Family and Medical Leave Act, paid vacation and other regulations. The labor movement is historically focused on building safe and economically viable communities with fair workplaces through education, grassroots organization, and civic engagement. Some of our recent activities include food box distribution, toy and coat drives, high school classroom presentations, voter registration and hosting the annual Labor Day Festival at Reid Park. Labor leaders recognize that this work often overlaps with the work of community agencies. As such, the purpose of the awards celebration is to honor individuals and organizations (both union and non-union) for their ability to raise awareness about local issues and union activities through acts of civic engagement.
This year PALF recognizes Youth On Their Own and will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the organization. Youth On Their Own is a 501 (C)(3) nonprofit here in Tucson. For almost 30 years they have assisted homeless youth through a financial stipend and basic needs to take the edge off of poverty so these students can graduate from high school. Tickets can be obtained through sponsorships purchased through PALF. Individual tickets can be purchased through the Rialto Theater Box Office. This event is open to the public.
